The Product

Email functionality within a CRM environment for both mobile and desktop experiences.

The Problem

Providing email functionality while highlighting its intended use, and dissuading potential misuse.

There were concerns about managing expectations since our users often send out mass emails and we didn't want to be the stand in for services like mail chimp for technical and legal reasons. There were also technical concerns due to our email server provider not being able to handle email loads as well as email marketing services. In addition to all of the above, there wasn’t a large amount of time allowed to design, so we had to be very efficient in our approach and my design.

The Goal

My objective was to design and integrate email features into Moxi Work's CRM software while maintaining established style guidelines and technical restraints.

  • High-fidelity prototype

Results

After researching best practices and keeping in mind technical limitations from our software, these were the first designs. I included a hard check in the form of a check mark if a message was being sent to more than 100 contacts at once. I included this for two reasons - I found that often users simply added more recipients than they wanted to and as a road block to dissuade users from using our platform as a substitute for other services like mail chimp.

What I learned:

This experience definitely highlighted for me how much technical restraints impact a design as seemingly simple as email. It  was also extremely eye opening how much past experiences users bring to a feature. In most users eyes email is email, so it was a challenge designing how we want our users to use our product and dissuading certain behaviors that could negatively impact them as end users, but also technically impact our product.
